JUNE JOURNAL CLUB ARTICLE

Here is the final article for Journal Club 2010-11.  It is also the first article using the blog format, I am crossing my fingers and toes!  My preference is to present articles that are no more than two years old but, there was a request for this topic and I found this one the best of the bunch.  If you are an ONS member, there is a related article in the April 2011 Clinical Journal with a .51 contact hour available.

You can access this article by using the following link. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1661634/
Oxaliplatin is a chemotherapy drug given frequently to our patients diagnosed
with metastatic colorectal cancer.  I hope this article gives all of us a greater
appreciation of the challenges they experience from their treatment.

The following questions are to be answered by old fashioned paper and pencil/pen.  Please print your name, unit, and the best way to contact you if necessary in the upper right hand corner.  They need to
be sent to Melissa Luebbe/Infusion Center by June 20th.

     1)  How soon can a patient experience side effects after receiving
           Oxaliplatin?

     2)  What are the potential side effects from the drug, and
what percentage of patients receiving it experience them?

     3)  What teaching points would you give a patient receiving Oxaliplatin?

     4)  What symptoms would you tell a patient to report to their
           Physician immediately?

     5)  What role does magnesium and calcium play with this
           treatment?

*Remember, you are welcome and encouraged to share your teaching tips and experiences on the blog!
To comment you need a gmail account.  They are easy to create, just Google
" gmail account," they are free.  I have one I set up for this blog only.

Hope you enjoy the article, I have been administering Oxaliplatin for years and gained many new insights into the drug and its side effects.

  2. Thanks Rose, at this time the answer portion will remain paper. Paper allows the freedom of limitless text for those who love to write. It also gives us a signature validating who did the work.
