September Journal Club Article

It is important for Oncology Nurses to understand the basic principles of Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting(CINV).  CINV is one of the most feared side effects someone about to undergo treatment may have.  It is my hope that after participating in the following articles and podcasts, you will become an expert and caring educator to our patient population, regardless of the area that you work in.

Go to, "Links You Might Enjoy" and select the ONS link.  Then choose Clinical Practice, then CINV.

Complete the following:  1)  What is CINV
                                         2)  General Overview
                                         3)  Pathophysiology of CINV
                                         4)  Risk Factors for CINV
                                         5)  ONS-PEP

Please complete and forward the following questions no later than September 30th.
They can be sent  inter-office mail to Melissa Luebbe c/o Pain Management or,
melissaluebbe@comcast.net

So, gather up some snacks and sit down to enjoy everything you wanted to know about CINV!

Questions:

1)   Name the five categories of CINV.

2)  Who is at  risk  for CINV?

3)  Name some potential health risks to someone experiencing CINV.

4)  Why does chemotherapy cause CINV?  Please explain this as if
you were asked this question by patient, friend, or loved one.

Next month we will continue on the theme of CINV.  Questions will involve interventions for prevention and control of CINV.  So, if you want to get ahead, continue on the CINV link listing Journal readings and podcasts.
