September 2016, Good-bye Summer - Hello Journal Club!

Welcome to Journalphoria, an on-line Journal Club created to increase dialogue and critical thinking skills through reading articles about oncology nursing and related topics.  For a Journal Club first timer, here are the basics.  Sign up for a G-mail account if you don't already have one. G-mail accounts are free, and allow you to access Journal Club articles anywhere and anytime. You may use your work computer, smart phone, tablet or home computer. Once your G-mail account is established, you will be able to sign onto the blog to make posts and reply to the posts of other Journal Club members.

Just like last year, there will be six posts.  Each post will have a selected reading that will be followed by 2-3 questions.  Each response to each question must be a minimum of 3-4 complete sentences that are written in a professional manner using your own words. Responses that are copy and pasted from the article or other articles without giving proper credit or citation to the author or source will not receive credit.  It is also important that responses start with your name and the unit where you work.  I am not trying to be an over-bearing rule monger, but we need to have some guidelines - and I believe these parameters are fair.

To receive full credit for Clinical Ladder you must also respond to the discussion question on the blog, as well as comment on someone else's blog post.  When you are blogging, please remember on-line courtesy and HIPAA!  Another important point to remember is that there are no wrong answers to the discussion questions.  The questions will ask you to use your nursing experience and critical thinking skills. Some of the topics may ask you to express your feelings or opinions.  When blogging, if the name that appears on the blog for everyone to see does not include your first and last name, please add your first and last name to the first line of your response.

As mentioned there will be six posts.  The first will be in October, then November, January, February, April and May.  Hopefully this schedule gives consideration to everyone's holiday season and spring break.

Finally, in order to join Journal Club this year, please do the following.  Sign onto the blog and introduce yourself and tell us where you work in the hospital. And since Journal Club is all about reading, in one or two sentences let everyone know what you read this summer. Not a reader, that's okay also. You do not have to respond to anyones post unless you choose to. You must also acknowledge that you understand and agree to follow the above mentioned guidelines for receiving Clinical Ladder credit.

Everyone has the month of September to work out any bugs or obstacles to posting on the blog. If you are unable to sign on to the blog by using your work computer, put in a ticket to IT as soon as possible.  10 out of 10 times difficulty in blogging is related to the browser you are using.

I am really excited about Journal Club this year and hope you are excited too!

Melissa

    3. I am writing my introduction as a reply due to issues with this blog not allowing me to post an original post. I did open up an IT ticket and had them fix it. It was working when I was on the phone with them last week, and today when I tried, it didn't work again. So here goes...I am Brenda Chiappetta with the wound care department. I love to read, but only have the time occasionally to do so with my busy life going for my Masters degree, and being a single mom with five kids. I am reading currently A Good Plan by Mair Hill. It is the book that was in our nurses week gift gym bag on ten simple steps to make healthy choices a habit. So far it is very good, and an easy read. I also started reading a book I ordered on Amazon called the Edgar Cayce Remedies. He talks about the Holistic approach to healing by eating healthy, exercising, and reducing stress in your life, along with many homeopathic remedies. It is amazing his knowledge. A great read. I bought three of his books...I better get going on them!
I understand the guidelines for the Journal Club blog, and the ACE Ladder. I look forward to blogging with all of you this year.

Aside from reading a bunch of books for my BMTCN exam, I also read "After Alice" by Gregory Maguire (he wrote the Wicked books). It was definitely different, but I really enjoyed it!
