Journal Club, Let's Get Started!
Journal Club is about to start it's eighth year at CTCA - Chicago. This on-line blog was created seven years ago to increase dialogue between nurses by sharing oncology and nursing related topics. The on-line format has allowed nurses to be part of a nursing journal club at their convenience. Last year we had forty-five nurses receive clinical ladder credit for their participation! For those of you who will be new to Journal Club, here is what you need to know.
Sign up for a Gmail account if you do not already have one. Gmail accounts are free and allow you to sign in to the blog in order to post responses and reply to other member's comments. Journal club articles can be accessed from your smart phone, tablet or home computer. Due to security settings, your work computer may block access to the blog. If this is the case then check the browser you are using, Firefox and Google Chrome are good choices.
This year there will be five articles posted. Each post will have a chosen reading that will be followed by two to three questions about the article. Responses to the article must be a minimum of three to four complete sentences that are written in a professional manner using your own words. Responses that are copy and pasted from the article or other articles without giving proper credit or citation to the author or source will not receive credit. Kindly do not send me bullet point answers because they are not sentences.
When sending your responses to me, please put the article's month in the subject box - this allows me to locate your answers easily when signing off for clinical ladder credit at the end of the year.
To receive full Clinical Ladder credit you must also respond to the discussion question, as well as comment on someone else comment. When you are blogging, please remember online courtesy and most of all HIPAA! Also remember this is a public blog that can be read by anyone, including administration. Disgruntled comments or criticism about the workplace can be shared anonymously at CEO Dropbox. When blogging, if the name that appears on the blog for everyone to see does not include your first and last name, please add your first and last name to the first line of your response.
This month is similar to a test drive in order to make sure you can log onto the blog. Please sign into the blog and introduce yourself, the unit you work on as well as how many years you have participated in journal club. Briefly include any oncology, nursing or health care topics that you would like Journal Club to include this year. Conclude by acknowledging that you understand and agree to follow the above mentioned guidelines for receiving Clinical Ladder credit.
I am looking forward to another great year for our group. Please believe me when I say that I enjoy the contributions that each one of you make to this unique on-line community!
Thank you for your participation - Melissa

ReplyDeleteI work in Rad Onc and have since 2012. This will be my 5th? season of Journal Club:-) I always enjoy reading about the THC topics, to keep it fresh in my mind as pts seem to want to talk about it more and more. I also would like to have the latest info on all this Vaping that is going on-shops are popping up everywhere and it apparently is just as bad if not worse for your health than cigarettes. Lastly, I love reading about research regarding lifestyle modifications that boost health and prevent cancer. Thanks again for hosting another season of JC:-)
DeleteHello fellow Journal Club members,
ReplyDeleteI am Brenda Chiappetta and I work in wound care. I have been participating in journal club for four years now and enjoy it and learn a lot. Since many of our patients receive steroids, and some in high doses, I would like to see something on steroid induced psychosis. Since working at the hospital, I have personally had patients who suffered from this and one who grabbed me and wouldn’t let go. A code strong was called and Dr Bloom talked with the patient for about 15 minutes before the patient would let go of my arm.
I agree to adhere to the guidelines for the 2018-2019 Journal Club.
