January 2020, Holistic Nursing

Happy 2020 - Holistic Nursing will be our focus for January. I try to select articles that are published within the last five years, but these two articles really stood out in their ability to capture the essence of holistic nursing. For the third post of our journal club year, please read Holistic Nursing: Focusing on the Whole Person, and   Holistic Nursing: Remembering Our Roots . For further information about Holistic Nursing, you can go to the American Holistic Nurses Association home page AHNA . We also have an active AHNA chapter at CTCA - Chicago, you can contact Cindy Ingram at cindy.ingram@ctca-hope.com for further questions.

Questions
What are the core values of holistic nursing, and how could they be integrated into our practices at CTCA-Chicago?

The second article states that nurses are experts at caring for others, and novices when it comes to caring for themselves. Why is self care so important for nurses and other health care providers to practice? What do you currently do for yourself that represents self care?

Discussion Question

As we have done in the past, review your New Year's resolutions from our January 2019 and see how you completed. If you achieved your goals - great, if not we have a fresh new year to try, and try again! Please share what your greatest achievement for 2019 was, along with what you hope to accomplish in this new year.

Please send your answers to melissa.luebbe@ctca-hope.com. I am a little off schedule, so our next journal club article will be in March.

    5. I like Julie's "purging the house." It is something hard to do... letting go of stuff, especially if memories are attached to it. But I aspire to purging, what to do with crates of beanie babies???

  3. My greatest achievement for 2019 was to lose weight by eating better, bringing my own lunch to work everyday and to avoid surgery on my cervical spine by being diligent with my physical therapy home exercises.

    1. I bring my lunch every day too-it is a Sunday ritual to get everything lined up and portioned out-totally worth it!

    2. That's a great accomplishment. I may steal that idea for one of my goals this year, banking on vendor lunches at work has not worked out well for my diet or wallet!

  4. Looking back at my 2019 resolution, I was not able to get my CPAN. But my new resolution for 2020 is to get my CPAN by June of 2020 because it is now a requirement. I feel that my greatest achievement in 2019, was knowing that if I discipline myself, I was able to eat healthy and exercise more than I have before. I must admit, the holidays set me back some but I am determined to get back on my healthy journey to live a better quality of life!

    4. Camille you can do it. I mean CPAN is a hard test but you are equipped to succeed. I believe you can do whatever you want as long as you really want it. You already validated yourself that you can do what you wish. Good luck!

  6. My goal was to prep for the ONS certification.I started out soundly preparing and it dwindled as I became more busy and stressed at work with the continued changes in nursing roles.I was happy that I improved my tennis game and I consigned some of my artwork. My plan is to eat better and work harder to get my house ready to be sold

For this year of 2020, I am hoping to maintain level 4 ACE clinical ladder. On a personal note, I have 2 children getting married this year so I really don't have to many ambitious professional goals with all the family stuff. 13. To be honest I do not even remember what my new years resolution was last year so I think its a safe bet that I did not achieve them. I know in general last year I tried to be more involved in counsels, which I did accomplish for volunteering to be co-chair of our outpatient UBC. For this year I do not have any resolutions regarding work, I have decided to focus on personal development goals and growing my family.

  14. One of my goals for 2019 was to pass the OCN which I did in May. (I'm still a little surprised that I passed.) Goals for 2020 include cutting back on my sweets intake and learning to accept all the imperfect things about myself. So far cutting down on sweets is far easier than accepting my imperfect self lol.

    1. Great job Kim on OCN! I also am cutting back on sweets this year... I feel once I get passed the first two weeks, it gets easier. I also think you should give your imperfect self more credit :) I once read something to the effect of "we see ourselves so often that we forget to appreciate the beauty a stranger sees".

  19. In my Sunday School class, someone read a devotional about making new years resolutions. It said that the most important part of making a resolution is the time taken to reflect on the previous year, self examining and looking forward to goals in the coming year. Keeping resolutions rarely are kept (at least by me). But hearing it worded in that way took a lot of guilt and burden off of what ever it is that I decided to make a priority. Instead I used the beginning of this year to reflect on personal/professional accomplishments and made plans on how I could improve or continue those things that helped me to grow.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't have a new years resolution for 2019 on Journalphoria since I am new to the Journal club this year. My greatest accomplishment in 2019 is the on boarding of 2 new surgeons in the surgery department for the Thoracic specialty line. In 2020, I hope to become more involved in UBC and participate in research studies and committees.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My resolution for 2019 was to say no when overwhelmed! I am still a work in progress here, but am really beginning to see my need more quickly, whether at work or home.

My greatest achievement in 2019? Spending a week in Nigeria on mission with my church in June, as part of a medical team. So many people! A precious time.

As for 2020-my goal will be to push through to more regular and consistent exercise. Good for my body and soul!

    ReplyDelete
  22. While I do not remember what my goals were for 2019 I do plan on making time in 2020 to focus on myself and getting back to living my healthier lifestyle. This will include changes in diet and getting back to walking everyday outside. It has always helped me to relieve stress and refocus.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Good for you! Walking outside is a favorite de-stressor for me as well! My goal is a healthier diet and lifestyle in 2020 as well. Cheers to a healthier and prosperous 2020!

  23. I have a 50% success rate on my previous goals. But for January 2019 goals, I can honestly say that I am about 80% . We traveled to a lot of places, I got to relax and had a great time. I also successfully passed my CEN exam as well. But the hardest thing for me is to eat healthy and exercise regularly......BUT it is a working progress.

So for 2020, I will put more time, effort and talent to eating healthy and exercising regularly. BUT I NEED HELP!!!! aside from Impossible Whopper, anyone who knows how to cook a vegetable that will taste like meat ( beef, chicken or pork ) please let me know. And thank you in advance....

    1. I agree Alex. Healthy eating and making time to exercise is hard. Too much convenient and comfort food available. With others being the priority to care for, it is hard to find time for oneself. Let's figure this out Alex. I'll be encouraging you.

  24. In 2019 I finished my MSN in nursing Education. My other goal was to use the renewal room at least weekly which I was able to do most weeks in 2019. For my goals for 2020, I will educate myself with weekly video’s and podcasts on nutrition and detoxification in the body along with getting more sleep-as sleep is just as important as nutrition. Finding more ways to incorporate self-care into my life and taking time to de-stress more.
    Here’s to a healthy and successful 2020!

  25. I looked up my 2019 goals in last year's Journalphoria as I could not remember them. I wanted to build up friendships as I let that slide when involved with my kids. Now we are empty nesters so my husband and I started having Trivia Contest parties and invited friends, neighbors, family. We created the categories and questions, made teams, then had competitions at our house. Tons of fun!!!!It was social time totally unrelated to oncology. That was a satisfying accomplishment as I value relationships and this nurtured the friendships I wanted to grow.
For 2020, I hope to be an asset to the Northeast Illinois ONS chapter as the vice president. I hope to help Carin, the president, in multiple ways and learn the president role as I transition into that role in 2021. Personally, I hope to be a resource and mentor to my daughter as she transitions from college BSN student to her first nursing job after May 2020.

(Plus We will keep throwing those Trivia Parties!)

  26. I can't remember what my goals for 2019 were. I did achieve level III for clinical ladder for the first time in 2019. Usually it is level II for ACE. This year's goals will be to maintain level III or achieve level IV. Obtaining my CNOR and coming up with a workout regimen and sticking to it are also on the list.

  27. I can’t recall my goal from last year. I am planning to work toward passing CNOR and maintaining level 3 clinical ladder. I am also committed to continue on healthy diet and balanced life. I hope to improve my exercise routines and work on self care as a main goal for 2020. I am focused on doing morning meditations and improving my sleep.

  28. Hey everyone!

My goal last year was to complete my BSN and I did it! This year I want to obtain my OCN. I have always done level 3 clinical ladder and I really want to keep that level if not go for level 4. I also want to work on eating a cleaner and anti-inflammatory diet. My body suffered a lot in 2019 with inflammation and stress and I want to do what I can to reduce that this year. Best of luck to everyone on completing their goals this year! :)

  29. Went back to look up my goal for 2019....
"As we all know health care has changed and we are all feeling the effects of this here at MRMC. So, my goal is to try to continue to have a positive and thankful attitude in this changed environment!". This is definitely still true and will continue to be my focus for this year. It seems that once we get used to changes that are made, more changes happen. But I am still thankful to be doing a job that I love what I do, so I will continue to try to focus on the positives and let go of any negativity.

This will continue to me my goal as changes are the way of life around here and in healthcare.

As we all know this is still a big thing around here! Once again, for the 3rd year in a row, this will continue to be what I strive for. I feel like everyone should try to strive for this. I feel that morale has gone down and we should all realize that we are all on the same boat and all have been effected. We should put forth effort to stay positive and care for one another as we do for our patients.
