This year besides this introductory post, there will be six articles posted. Each post will have a selected reading that will be followed by 2-3 questions. When responding to the questions, each response must be a minimum of 3-4 complete sentences that are written in a professional manner using your own words. Responses that are copy and pasted from the article or other articles without giving proper credit or citation to the author or source will not receive credit. When sending your answers to me, please put the article's month in the subject box - this allows me to find your responses easily when you submit for ACE credit.
To receive full credit for Clinical Ladder you must also respond to the discussion question on the blog, as well as comment on someone elses blog post. When you are blogging, please remember online courtesy and HIPAA! Please also remember that this is a public blog that can be read by anyone, including administration. So you just might want to share any workplace complaints anonymously with CEO Dropbox. Another important point to remember is that there are no wrong answers to the discussion questions. The questions will ask you to use your nursing experience and critical thinking skills. Some of the topics may ask you to express your feelings or opinions. When blogging, if the name that appears on the blog for everyone to see does not include your first and last name, please add your first and last name to the first line of your response.
For this month, please sign on to the blog and introduce yourself, the unit you work on and how many years you have participated in Journal Club. I would also like for you to briefly include any oncology or nursing topics that you would like Journal Club to explore this year. You must also acknowledge that you understand and agree to follow the above mentioned guidelines for receiving Clinical Ladder credit.
Everyone has the month of September to work out any bugs or obstacles to posting on the blog. Please use Firefox or Google Chrome for your browser. If you are unable to sign on to the blog by using your work computer, put in a ticket to IT as soon as possible. Almost all difficulty in blogging can be linked to the browser you are using, or a lap-top that has not been updated by IT.
The first post will be in October, then November, January, February, April and May.
Hopefully this schedule gives consideration to everyone's holiday season and spring break.
Please send any questions or concerns to melissa.luebbe@ctca-hope.com

ReplyDeleteThank you Theresa - working in the infusion center was one of my favorite nursing experiences!

ReplyDeleteGood day, everyone! My name is Theresa Minniear. I have been at CTCA for 11 years, the last 3.75 in Clinical Research. I have 2 boys (ages 3 and almost 2) who keep me on my toes when I am not here.
I have participated in Journal Club since I started at CTCA, although it was sporadic at first. Back in the day, we met in a small 3rd floor conference room (which no longer exists). Everyone usually got pulled back to the floor. This way is much better!
For topics, I am interested in learning about the primary differences between childhood and adult cancers, stem-cell transplants and rare cancers that do not receive a lot of funding/publicity.
I understand and agree to the guidelines for receiving Clinical Ladder credit.
I too would like to see articles on stem-cell transplants and rare cancers!
DeleteGlad that you had a gig in Radiation Oncology during your 11 years here Theresa!
I am Tina Luckett. I work in Radiation Oncology and have been here for almost 11 years. I have participated in Journal Club since its inception. Some areas that I would like to see are The microbiome, targeted therapies, and self care.

This year in Journal Club, I would love to read more about holistic practices and targeted therapies. I acknowledge, understand, and agree to follow the mentioned guidelines for receiving Clinical Ladder credit.
My name is Elizabeth Hostetler. I have worked at CTCA for 8 years in October and this will be my 2nd year participating in Journal Club. I presently work in the outpatient breast and reconstructive surgical clinic, but started my nursing career on the Medical Surgical unit.

I acknowledge, understand, and agree to follow the mentioned above guidelines to receiving clinical ladder credit.
Hi Elizabeth,
DeleteThe topics you bring up that interest you are good ones. I would also be interested in learning about them. I would love to learn about care giver strain and what we as nurses can do in the time that we are with a patient's caregiver to lighten the load and help them to be cared for as well.
Great ideas!
Hi Stephanie and Elizabeth,

Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie Graham. I work on the 3rd floor Medical Oncology unit. I have been in Journal Club for 4 years now and I love it! I recently obtained my Holistic Nursing certification, so I would really be interesting in exploring more holistic modalities related to nursing and oncology. I think this could really relate to our facility and give us some insight for inpatient and outpatient areas. I acknowledge, understand and agree to the Journal Club guidelines. Thank you, Melissa, for all of your hard work putting this together for all of us!
ReplyDeleteStephanie,
DeleteI think this would be a great topic. I was visiting a friend who is inpatient at Lake Forest Hospital and she was just diagnosed with ST IV Lung Cancer. She worked at the same hospital for many years and when I suggested she come to CTCA for a second opinion she didn't feel it was necessary because according to her, they offer all of the same services that we offer. I am not certain if that is true but it is her perspective. So, we need to find more things that set us apart and focusing on holistic nursing is a wonderful start.
Thank you Stephanie, I enjoy your participation!

ReplyDeleteAlthough I have seen this video before, it is still effective and timeless. It is powerful enough to send an important "reality check" without using any dialogue or narration. It has been very well produced. When illness or tragedy occurs, it changes a person's life instantly. This video covers so many aspects of a persons life that will never be the same. Terminal illness, chronic pain, shock, financial ramifications, emotional responses, both good and bad are life-altering. Keeping in mind that I work in surgery at a hospital that treats advanced-stage cancer patients, I can relate to how important it is to detect cancer in the early stages and how that changes prognosis and treatment options. The scene of the man sitting nervously who has been waiting for hours reminds me how appreciative our patient's family members are when we give them a call at the beginning of the surgical procedure and update them every two hours. It may sometimes feel like just a policy at times, but it is rewarding to hear how thankful they are to be getting updates on their loved ones.

I greatly appreciate the extension date for this year, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to join. I would be interested in seeing how "Music' can be used to help patients and I wold also like to read articles that help nurses to bring healing modalities to the patients' bedside. I agree to the terms that must be met for me to be credited for participation in Journal Club 2017. Thank you, and looking forward to increasing my knowledge base in the field of oncology!
