September, 2019 - Let's Get Started!

Once again, I am delighted to announce the start of another year for Journalphoria, the on-line Journal Club of Cancer Treatment Centers of America - Chicago. I can hardly believe that this will be our ninth year!

Last year we had forty-one stakeholders receive clinical ladder credit (2 points) for their participation. For those of you new to Journal Club, please do the following in order to be part of this group.

Sign up for a gmail account if you do not already have one. Gmail accounts are free and allow you to sign in to the blog and post comments on the discussion board. Journal Club articles can be accessed from your smart phone, tablet or home computer. Due to security settings, your work computer may block access to the blog. If this happens, check your browser - Google Chrome and Firefox will work.

Just like last year, we will continue with five posts.  Each post will have an article to read as well as a discussion topic to blog about. In order to receive credit for each monthly post, you must respond with a minimum of two to three complete sentences for each question. When answering the article's questions, the following are non-negotiable and absolute deal breakers.
  • Bullet point answers!
  • Copy and pasted answers that do not give proper credit or citation to the author.
  • Copy and pasted answers that give credit and citation but do not include your personal interpretation or commentary along with them.
Receiving full credit also includes responding to the discussion question as well as commenting on someone else's response. These are important points when responding to the discussion questions;
  • On-line courtesy.
  • HIPAA - this is a public blog that can be read by anyone, including administration.
  • If anyone has a beef about workplace issues, do not use this forum to air them.  Please share your complaints with CEO Dropbox.
  • When you are blogging, if your name does not appear on the post, please include your first and last name to the first line of your response.
When sending your responses to me, please put the article's month in the subject box - this allows me to locate your answers easily when signing off for clinical ladder credit at the end of the year.

This post is a practice post in order to make sure you can log onto the blog. For this month, please sign into the blog and introduce yourself, the unit you work on, as well as how many years you have participated in journal club. Briefly include any oncology, nursing or health care topics that you would like Journal Club to include this year. Conclude by acknowledging that you understand and agree to follow the above mentioned guidelines for receiving Clinical Ladder credit.

I look forward to another year with this group. Thank you for being part of this special on-line community!

  1. This is Julie Heyer from Radiation Oncology. I think this must be my 5th or 6th year of Journal Club participation?? I would love to hear about all the CBD products that seem to be infiltrating the market in so many forms and venues, vaping and the newly seen syndromes(some very serious and permanent) that are affecting "vaporers", and a Cliff Notes explanation of how Medicare really works(is that possible?)for those that have only Medicare/Medicare and supplements/neither one at all(is that possible?)..We seem to be having all kinds of issues around Medicare now that we are seeing more patients with it. Lastly, I understand and agree to follow the mentioned guidelines for getting Clinical ladder credit. Thank you for heading up this activity again Melissa:-)
